Our Cancer Center has always been on the cutting edge of technology. For example, we were the first in the world to install a robotic couch on its radiation treatment table, and the first in Wisconsin to offer Xofigo to patients with prostate cancer that had spread to bones.
Our state-of-the-art technology delivers precise customized treatments while substantially reducing the risk to surrounding normal tissue.
Our Cancer Center houses the Phillips Brilliance Big Bore CT scanner in a large and brightly lit room. Our large open “donut” shaped CT scanner will accommodate a variety of patient immobilization devices and set-up configurations. The goal of the CT simulation is to scan the patient in a reproducible position, thus patient comfort is key throughout the entire process.
Radiation Treatment Planning
We use the latest planning technology to develop the best plans for our patients. MIM software is used to help the radiation oncologist identify the tumor with great accuracy, by overlaying the CT simulation scan done at the cancer center with an MRI or PET scan. Every patient receives a custom treatment plan using our Philips Pinnacle treatment planning software. After a treatment plan is generated, qualified physics staff perform quality assurance to ensure safe and accurate delivery.
Our Cancer Center has two linear accelerators that deliver external radiation. Two accelerators help us treat patients more efficiently, so you will spend less time in our waiting room. In addition, the Rapid Arc technology allows for faster treatment times, so you will be on-and-off the table in no time.
Some of the technical capabilities of our linear accelerators include:
- 3D conformal treatments
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)
- Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)
- Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
- Cone beam CT
Our Cancer Center was the first center in the world to install the Protura robotic couch on its radiation treatment machine. The Protura couch is a robotic table-top that allows for small changes in positioning without having to physically move the patient on the couch. This allows for more accurate treatments and saves time from re-positioning patients once they are on the table.
Tumors in the chest and abdomen often move while we breathe. At our Cancer Center, we have the ability to track tumor motion through our respiratory gating technology. This technology allows us to know how the tumor moves during the breathing cycle and ensures accurate radiation delivery to the tumor.
Our Cancer Center was the first in Wisconsin to offer cutting-edge medical treatments for prostate cancer that had spread to bone. By injecting radioactive particles directly into the tumor, we can spare healthy tissue and limit complications that may be associated with other cancer therapies. Our current arsenal of radionuclides includes: Radium 223 and Yttrium 90.
For every cancer patient requiring radiation, our technology allows us to:
- Deliver optimal doses to the tumor
- Minimize radiation dose to normal tissues
- Provide customized precise alignment
- May decrease side effects
- Reduce treatment time
As the only provider locally to offer advanced treatment options in radiation therapy, we are proud to be a leader in the latest treatment technology.
