It seems like concussions have become an injury that gets more attention than it ever has in the past. With notable concussions to professional athletes being in the news, one can’t help hearing about concussions and being more aware of the harmful short and long-term effects that they can have on the brain. With being more aware of signs and symptoms of when one has a concussion, there have been advancements in determining when one will be cleared from a concussion and is safe to return to activity and sport. ImPACT is a program that can help determine when one is safe to resume normal activity again. What is ImPACT? ImPACT is a computerized neurological exam that tests and evaluates athletes’ brains before (baseline) and after (post-test) receiving a sports-related concussion.
A post-test helps a physician determine if the athlete’s brain is fully recovered from the concussion and if an athlete can return to normal activity levels. The test also defines educational adaptations, such as reducing the length of the school day or postponing exams for the student suffering a concussion. It is important to note that when using the ImPACT program, even though it can be used without a baseline test, is best used when one has a baseline test available to use.
How do I get a baseline test for my son or daughter? Agnesian HealthCare has partnered with the following high schools and colleges to provide ImPACT baseline testing for their athletes: Campbellsport High School, Fond du Lac High School, Laconia High School, Lomira High School, Marian University, Markesan High School, Mayville High School, North Fond du Lac High School, Oakfield High School, Ripon College, Ripon High School, St. Mary’s Springs Academy, University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac, Waupun High School, and Winnebago Lutheran Academy. Agnesian HealthCare also has baseline testing options available for those who are not yet in high school and for those who are not participating in sports at the high school or collegiate level. You can get more information on when baseline testing is offered by contacting the Athletic Trainer at each respective school.
