Agnesian HealthCare has received the Supply Chain Excellence Award from Premier Inc., a leading healthcare improvement company, for its high-value purchasing practices.

“Agnesian HealthCare is continuously advancing its supply purchasing strategies and collaborating to share best practices that support Premier alliance members,” says Durral R. Gilbert, present of Premier supply chain services. “We are thrilled to present them with this honor as they work to provide high-value care in their community.”

One of 14 hospitals and health systems to receive the award this year, Agnesian HealthCare accepted the award at Premier’s 2017 Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition in Washington, DC, in late June.

“We have been working diligently for nearly three years to establish practices that help us reduce our supply expenses by maintaining strict contract compliance, minimize waste, maximize utilization, manage our stock in hand and negotiate strong local contracts,” says Andy Howard, Agnesian HealthCare director of Supply Chain Management. “We also evaluate any new supply requests through surgical services and patient care value analysis committees. We have standardized similar supplies throughout the health system to avoid duplication while ensuring we have on hand what we need to provide superior patient care.”

To be eligible, each organization had to submit four quarters of calendar 2016 data to Supply Focus, which includes the industry’s largest comparative database of operational and supply chain cost information for acute care hospitals. Winners were identified using four industry standard case-mix-index-adjusted supply expense ratios and a peer grouping methodology to ensure that organizations of diverse sizes and complexity were considered equally.

With 40 indicators measuring and trending performance in cost and operations, Supply Focus enables hospitals to compare supply expense performance to that of similar facilities and easily identify improvement opportunities.
