Peter and Kathy Burns, lifelong Fond du Lac residents, were enjoying life - 36 years of marriage, their four children and nine grandchildren.
In June 2016, Peter began having issues with balance, vision and motor skills, and within a few days he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the meninges, a rare form of cancer that affects the tissue surrounding the brain. Peter’s tumor was very advanced and the Burns family was referred to Agnesian HealthCare's Hospice Hope to begin planning Peter’s end-of-life care.
Peter and his nurse, Judy Wyant, created a special bond and Judy became a friend to the entire family. Judy and the Hospice Hope team made special arrangements to ensure that Peter could safely attend his daughter’s wedding. Peter’s attendance at his daughter’s wedding was something that even cancer couldn’t take from him. The day after the wedding, Peter became unresponsive and on September 2, 2016, Peter entered his eternal life.
The Agnesian HealthCare Foundation supports the work of the Hospice Hope program, ensuring that all individuals who need it have access to hospice care. For information on how to support the work of the foundation, visit agnesian.com/giving.
